DSGN Unfiltered: Expanding the Conversation Within Design
In an industry that celebrates craft and storytelling, so much of what we see reflects the final result. The case study. The polished presentation. The work at its best. But behind every outcome is a deeper layer of conversation. The decisions, the trade-offs, the moments of uncertainty that shape the work along the way.
DSGN Unfiltered was created to bring more of that conversation into the open. Not to replace what already exists, but to expand it.
Why We Created It
As a studio, we’ve always believed that design is strengthened through shared perspective. Some of the most valuable insights come from the in-between moments. The discussions that happen during the process, not just after it’s complete.
DSGN Unfiltered was built to create space for that exchange. A forum where creatives can speak more openly about their experiences and where different perspectives can be explored in real time. It’s a shift from presenting finished thinking to engaging in active dialogue. And in doing so, it opens up a richer, more layered conversation around design.
Rethinking the Format
From the beginning, we knew this couldn’t be a standard panel.
DSGN Unfiltered is designed around dialogue, not presentation. Instead of a one-way conversation, the format invites the audience directly into it. Attendees don’t just listen, they engage, react, and take a position. One of the simplest but most effective tools has been the use of opposing sides and audience paddles. A or B. Agree or disagree. Hot or not. These moments create immediate tension in the room, forcing people to choose a side and, more importantly, explain why.
That shift transforms the energy. Conversations become more dynamic, more honest, and less predictable. Perspectives are challenged in real time, and the line between panelist and audience begins to blur. It’s not about landing on the “right” answer. It’s about opening up the conversation.
The Conversations We’re Creating
Each DSGN Unfiltered event explores a different dimension of the design experience, all grounded in the same intention to challenge how we talk about our work:
The Work Ethic Discussion
A candid look at the realities behind the grind. Discipline, burnout, boundaries, and the pressure to perform in an industry that often glorifies overwork.
On Trend, Off Script
Moving beyond surface-level trend conversations to question authorship, originality, and whether designers are shaping culture or reacting to it.
Design Horror Stories
Unfiltered stories from the side of design we rarely see. Scope creep, difficult clients, legal challenges, misalignment, and the lessons that come from navigating them.
Each theme opens up a different layer of the industry, but together, they create a more complete and honest picture of what it actually means to practice design today.
The Impact
What started as an experiment has grown into something much larger. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, not just in attendance, but in the depth of engagement. People stay after. Conversations continue. New relationships form. Perspectives shift in ways that carry beyond the room.
We’ve consistently heard the same thing from attendees: this feels different. And that difference comes from the level of openness the series creates. DSGN Unfiltered has unlocked a kind of dialogue that doesn’t typically exist in industry settings, one that makes space for nuance, honesty, and perspectives that don’t always fit into a polished presentation.
That openness has a ripple effect. Attendees bring these conversations back into their teams and their work, influencing how they think, collaborate, and create. Beyond the room itself, the format and energy of DSGN Unfiltered have started to extend into other spaces, with studios and teams adopting similar approaches to foster more open and participatory dialogue within their own communities.
Not just hosting the conversation, but influencing how it happens more broadly.
A Different Kind of Platform
At its core, DSGN Unfiltered reflects how we think about design. The best work doesn’t come from a single, perfectly packaged point of view. It comes from tension, from collaboration, and from the willingness to challenge assumptions.
This series isn’t about having the right answers. It’s about asking better questions and creating a space where perspective matters more than presentation.
What’s Next
As DSGN Unfiltered continues to grow, so does its role within the design community. New themes, new voices, and new perspectives will continue to shape where it goes next, but the intention remains the same. Create space for the conversations that move the industry forward, because design doesn’t evolve through perfection — it evolves through honesty.
